Re: Moving tempdb database fragments off the master device

Hi there,

I have documented three procedures to perform this "hack". And yes, like Bret mentionned, it is not recommended. However, that is not to say, that it is a bad thing as long as you understand the issues.

After performing the operation, things should work fine until, and if, you are required to perform a recovery of the master device with the buildmaster command and then load a dump of the master database.

The buildmaster command creates a brand new master device, with brand new master, model, and tempdb databases, in their default sizes and the corresponding mappings in sysdatabases, sysdevices and sysusages.

Loading a dump of master would overwrite this information, so if I recall correctly, you would have to update the rows in these three system tables to reflect the desired fragmentation prior to loading the dump.

These remarks, uncensored, off the top of my head.

Bret?

Regards,

Jean-Pierre

P.S. I was going to document this for my students, but this was homework.

Saludos,

Jean-Pierre
